Resolution over Linear Equations and Multilinear Proofs

چکیده
We develop and study the complexity of propositional proof systems of varying strength extending resolution by allowing it to operate with disjunctions of linear equations instead of clauses. We demonstrate polynomial-size refutations for hard tautologies like the pigeonhole principle, Tseitin graph tautologies and the clique-coloring tautologies in these proof systems. Using the (monotone) interpolation by a communication game technique we establish an exponential-size lower bound on refutations in a certain, considerably strong, fragment of resolution over linear equations, as well as a general polynomial upper bound on (non-monotone) interpolants in this fragment. We then apply these results to extend and improve previous results on multilinear proofs (over fields of characteristic 0), as studied in [RT06]. Specifically, we show the following: • Proofs operating with depth-3 multilinear formulas polynomially simulate a certain, considerably strong, fragment of resolution over linear equations. • Proofs operating with depth-3 multilinear formulas admit polynomial-size refutations of the pigeonhole principle and Tseitin graph tautologies. The former improve over a previous result that established small multilinear proofs only for the functional pigeonhole principle. The latter are different than previous proofs, and apply to multilinear proofs of Tseitin mod p graph tautologies over any field of characteristic 0. We conclude by connecting resolution over linear equations with extensions of the cutting planes proof system.

The field of proof complexity aims at characterizing which statements have short proofs in a given formal proof system. This thesis is a contribution to proof complexity broadly construed as the field that studies the sizes of structured or symbolic proofs. Our focus will be on the development and complexity-theoretic study of new frameworks, mainly of an algebraic nature, for providing, among ...
متن کاملPolynomial Simulation and Refutation of Complex Formulas of Resolution over Linear Equations in Propositional Proof System
Abstract In this paper, we present that the propositional proof system R(lin) (Resolution over Linear Equations) established by Ran Raz and Iddo Tzameret is not a super system, there exists a sequence of tautologies, which require proof complexity exponential in size of tautologies. We show that there are the sequence of unsatisfiable collections of disjuncts of linear equations, which require ...
متن کاملMultilinear forms which are products of linear forms
The conditions under which, multilinear forms (the symmetric case and the non symmetric case),can be written as a product of linear forms, are considered. Also we generalize a result due to S.Kurepa for 2n-functionals in a group G.

We consider the Brascamp–Lieb inequalities concerning multilinear integrals of products of functions in several dimensions. We give a complete treatment of the issues of finiteness of the constant, and of the existence and uniqueness of centred gaussian extremals. For arbitrary extremals we completely address the issue of existence, and partly address the issue of uniqueness. We also analyse th...
متن کاملResolution of Fuzzy Complex Systems of Linear Equations Via Wu's Method
The aim of this paper is to present algebraic method which is called Wu's method to solving fuzzy complex systems of linear equations. Wu's method is used as a solution procedure for solving the crisp polynomial equations system. This algorithm leads to solving characteristic sets that are amenable to easy solution. To illustrate the easy application of the proposed method, numerical examples a...
